1stLearns FAQ

Can I pay for my driving lessons by card?

Unfortunately not at this time, however I hope to add this feature in the near future.

When can I start to learn to drive?

You can apply for your provisional driving licence when you are 16, and you can have your first driving lesson on your 17th birthday. If you are getting Disability Living Allowance at a higher rate, you can start when you are 16.

Do you have female instructors?

Unfortunately not at this time. However I am currently seeking high graded enthusiastic female instructors.

How much do you charge for driving lessons?

My prices can be found on the Price Plan page.

Do you do automatic lessons?

I can if you supply the car! I am currently on the lookout for a high graded automatic instructor, so watch this space.

How long are the driving lessons?

That's entirely up to you. The advantage of a longer driving lesson is that you can cover more and go further. The shorter lessons work well if your time is limited.  We recommend that most pupils start with 1 hour lessons increasing to 1 1/2 hours and on to 2 hour lessons as your confidence and concentration improves.

How long will it take me to pass?

According to the DSA the national average is roughly 45 hours with a Driving Instructor, and 22 hours of private practice. However, everyone is different, and the time taken will normally depend on your experience and confidence.

Hourly driving lessons, or an intensive course?

The advantage of an intensive course is that it's all done in a relatively short space of time, with the test at the end, and tends to suite people that have had some road experience already, such as riding a moped or motorbike. However, if you have a full time job, or college to attend, you might find a few hours a week more suitable.

What is the New Driver's Act?

Your driving licence is automatically revoked if you build up six or more penalty points within two years of passing your first driving test. This includes any penalty points you had before passing the test, which are still valid. You will have to reapply for your driving licence, and retake your theory and driving tests.

How does a Driving Instructor become fully qualified?

To become an ADI (Approved Driving Instructor), a person needs to:

  • Have held a full driving licence for 4 years.
  • Pass a much tougher theory test than the learner drivers.
  • Pass a very strict test of driving ability.
  • Pass a test of their ability to teach.
  • Maintain a high standard of tuition. This is regularly checked by a supervising examiner from the DSA.
  • Registered with the DSA.
  • Be checked be the Criminal Records Bureau.
  • Display their valid green badge in the windscreen while teaching driving lessons.
